26/09/2007 13:02:39On September 1st, Royal Mail added a minimum order value of £5 onto their PPI submitted postal dockets. This now means any mailing that totals less that £5 will be rounded up to £5. Although most customers that use PPI are mailing a large quantity of mailing they may also occasionally send small quantities of mailing and will therefore also be affected.
Royal Mail have now also admitted that customers using the Royal Mail e-pro online docket service may be charged a minimum of more that £5 as the minimum order value is being calculated per line. This means that First Class mail, Second Class mail, etc will all be calculated in isolation, potentially increasing a customers costs. If the customer were sending 1000 Second Class letters and only 2 First Class letters the 2 First Class letters would cost a huge £2.50 each to send.
Royal Mail have decided to allow customers to claim a refund where they are charged for multiple minimum order values in the same day, but to make things difficult they require the customer to apply for the refund. It is not automatic. So does this making franking machines the better alternative?
