What is Cleanmail Advance?

Added: 26/01/2007 Reporter: Peter James

Cleanmail Advance is a discount scheme aimed at organisations within the UK that perform mailings of over 1000 items on a regular basis. Although it requires registration, Royal Mail have designed this scheme to have as little paperwork and requirements as possible.

How does Cleanmail Advance Work?
To use Cleanmail Advance you must meet the Royal Mail's specified letter dimensions, address location, and clear zones. You must also apply for a licence through your Royal Mail account manager. The minimum number of items within a Cleanmail Advance mailing is 1000 Items.

When submitting this mail you must also complete a Customer Collection Receipt and present the letters in trays. The Customer Collection Receipt is instead of the usual more complex docket.

Once the items enter the Royal Mail system the Royal Mail sorting machines read your Royal Mail assigned licence number, check the letter's address for accuracy and allocate a discount on each item that has an accurate address and can be automatically sorted. Items failing to be automatically sorted are priced as Account or Franked Meter Standard Tariff.

What is the Royal Mail Assigned License Number?
When you apply for the Cleanmail Advance scheme Royal Mail assigns you a 12 character code called a Licence Number. There is a separate License Number for 1st Class and 2nd class mail. The Licence Number needs to be applied to the top central area of each envelope used in the mailing when the Printed Postage Impression (PPI) or Franked Meter Impression is applied. If the License Number cannot be read then no discount will be given by Royal Mail.
