A nine-year-old girl from Welshpool was left disappointed when she opened her birthday mail when she realised that a gift had gone missing.
Alice Wilding had been expecting a £5 birthday present but instead received a letter of apology from Royal Mail who informed her the letter had been tampered with "due to criminal activity", reports the County Times.
There was also a piece of somebody else's card inside the envelope, suggesting that other cards had been compromised and valuables possibly stolen.
Her mother Alison told the local news provider: "The card was sent from a lovely old couple who put me up while I was in university in Wolverhampton. We have stayed in touch ever since and they have always sent the kids a card on their birthday.
"They told me there should have been a £5 note in the card - but this is no longer there."
Royal Mail encourages customers who wish to send cash in the mail to make use of the company's Special Delivery Service to ensure the money they send does not go astray.
