Mailing software solutions company Pitney Bowes is working with ProLiteracy, a US adult literacy organisation to equip adults with skills necessary to survive the increasingly dire employment market.

This Thursday (June 18th), a meeting of senior business leaders will take place to address some of the challenges faced by those who lack a basic education, particularly as unemployment among individuals with minimal education is reported to be as high as 15 per cent in the US.

John Ward, president of Pitney Bowes Mail Services, commented: "An educated workforce is a critical element of our nation's ability to compete and lead in a global marketplace.

"Businesses, federal, state and local governments need to work together to better educate and train American workers and boost U.S. global competitiveness."

When Laubach Literacy International and Literacy Volunteers of America joined forces in 2002, ProLiteracy was established.

ProLiteracy Worldwide now works in countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Middle East to work with communities to raise educational standards.
