Mail workers continue to be terrorised by dogs while delivering letters and packages, according to a recent survey.

Pit bulls came top of a list of types of dogs that strike fear into the hearts of mail men, with rottweilers a close second.

The study, which was carried out by esure, also revealed that three quarters of postmen and women have come across threatening or intimidating dogs while on their mail round.

Mike Pickard, head of pet insurance at esure, commented: "Man's best friend can be a postman's worst enemy if not properly trained by its owner.

"With 'Beware Of The Dog' signs commonplace on letterboxes and gates across the UK, it's not just the usual suspects such as the Pit Bull that are putting posties on edge during their rounds.

"Smaller toy breeds such as the Yorkie and Jack Russell were also named and shamed.

"Owners should always have control of their dog at home and when out and about."

Pit bull dogs are illegal under the Dangerous Dogs Act and can only be kept by holders of a special license who must keep their dogs muzzled in public.ADNFCR-1606-ID-19274303-ADNFCR
