A Torquay postman was the victim of crime, which led to residents in the area having their letters, parcels and packages compromised.
The Royal Mail worker was carrying out his regular round and had been in the process of emptying a box when he was alerted to the sound of his van being driven off, reports the South Devon Herald Express.
It was after 18:00 (BST) that the incident occurred and the red Vauxhall Combi was found abandoned half an hour later with some items of post having been opened.
Detective Constable Stu Sweatman, of Torbay Police's burglary and vehicle team, told the local news provider: "The postman was emptying a box nearby when he heard the screeching wheels of his vehicle.
"He looked up to see a man driving away from the scene."
Yesterday (July 8th) marked the beginning of a three-day strike by London Royal Mail workers over pay and modernisation.
